One in four US restaurants already uses AI: the 2026 report

Artificial intelligence is no longer just a promise: it's already in the kitchen and out on the floor. According to the State of the Restaurant Industry 2026 from the National Restaurant Association, 26% of operators say they use AI-based tools. Translation: one in four US restaurants has already brought AI into its business, and that share is growing year over year.

Where they actually use it

The most widespread area is marketing (19% at full-service, 15% at limited-service): social posts, menu descriptions, campaigns to bring customers back. But the fastest-growing front is customer-facing operations. Direct use on orders is still around 6%, yet that's exactly where the attention is concentrated: more and more venues are using AI to answer the phone, take orders and reservations, route deliveries, and forecast demand and prep times.

Why it's happening now

Two forces are pushing in the same direction: rising costs (labor, food cost, energy) and the difficulty of finding staff. AI doesn't solve everything, but it takes the repetitive work off your plate — the stuff that eats up hours without adding value — and leaves people to do what they do best: cook and welcome guests.

What it means for your restaurant

The advantage is no longer about "being first": it's about not falling behind. When a quarter of your competitors answer every call, update prices in a second, and bring customers back at just the right moment, whoever stands still loses ground without even realizing it. An agent that handles orders, checkout, and the menu through conversation — like on WhatsApp — puts that power within reach of even a single-location restaurant, with no IT department.

Where to start, without turning everything upside down

  • Start with just one area: having the agent answer the phone or take direct orders delivers results you can measure right away.
  • Keep the human where it counts: AI covers the repetitive work, people handle the experience.
  • Measure: orders taken after hours, calls not missed, time freed up for your staff.

The report captures a transition already underway. The question for 2026 isn't "whether" to adopt AI, but which part of your restaurant to start with.
